I’m often asked what I consider to be the most luxurious place or brand in the world. I usually skirt the question, not wanting to favour one brand or destination over its equally worthy competitor. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and so is luxury.
Lately, I’ve started to think more about what is truly luxurious in a world where so many of us own and have access to so many wonderful things. Perhaps I’m (finally) maturing, or maybe I’m being influenced by my concern for the future I’m leaving behind for my grandchildren. I find myself re-evaluating what’s important and wanting to make thoughtful decisions that involve acting with foresight and concern for the planet and everyone on it. After all, the impact that our lifestyles, business endeavours, and travel adventures have on the environment are beyond topics of conversation now.
We’re finally getting rid of single-use plastics, being mindful of eating local produce, recycling our garbage, reducing meat from our diets… However, our sustainability journey should go longer, deeper and take in a much
larger envelope.
We should become leaders wherever we can by taking responsibility for and being mindful of people, animals and plants. Asking bigger questions than “how much?” and “when can I get it?” when it comes to fashion, furnishings, appliances and home renovations. Instead, we should inquire about manufacturers, suppliers and destinations that are socially responsible, community focused and committed to humanitarian causes.
For me, real luxury is swimming in the sea, rather than a pool. Breathing fresh air, not air conditioning. Having the time and space to consciously create more healthy and eco-friendly surroundings not just for my family, but for generations to come.
So, let’s all think about the bigger picture… As Malala Yousafzai once said, “When the world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.”
