Casting a ‘real’ net

Matters not whether you’re seeking out new investment opportunities, hunting for a new home, looking for better service providers or searching up-and-coming travel destinations, it’s all about having good connections.

We’ve all benefited from networking and referrals, “A friend of a friend of my brother’s used this guy and he was great. Our neighbours loved this new restaurant. My boss and his wife couldn’t say enough good things about this cruise” But, these associations aren’t necessarily the building blocks for real relationships.

In The Joy of Connections, (written before she passed in July, 2024), Dr. Ruth Westheimer, better known as Dr. Ruth, the sex therapist and talks about what she calls a ‘vital kick in the pants’ when it comes to getting back to basics.

Westheimer claims that our worlds have shrunk to the point where almost everyone finds themselves with fewer and fewer real connections. Sure, most of us have social friends and we’re digitally linked but, the good doctor claims that what we’ve morphed into simply isn’t enough for our long-term health and well-being.

Calling on us to ‘re-think our thinking’ and cast a wider, more meaningful net, Dr. R offers 100 ideas for finding real, more enduring, human connections at home and in our travels.

Her message is simple and well worth the short time it takes to digest. And, I suspect fodder for helping us add a few connection-suggestions to our 2025 New Year’s resolutions.
