Staying Calm and Carrying On

Savile Road, The Royal Ascot and tea at Brown’s: Head on over this summer to show your support

It’s a quiet Thursday morning in Mayfair. There’s a fresh summer breeze blowing and the sun is shining just enough to make me smile. As I sit in an elegant Italian leather chair waiting for a friend, who is stopped at the exclusive Franck Namani boutique near Bond Street, I’m struck by the calm resolve of Londoners amidst the horrors of recent days.

This is, after all, a city in mourning. A city that’s had to pick itself up and boldly carry on far too many times as of late. From the turmoil of the Brexit vote and the election fallout to the angst caused by horrific terrorist attacks and the devastating high-rise fire, England has been in the news for all the wrong reasons.

But daily life goes on in true British style, albeit a little more cautiously. While quietly comforting and consoling grieving neighbours and friends, Londoners seem to be keeping their traditional stiff upper lip. Yes, it’s business as usual, at least on the surface. This is, after all, the most iconic of international cities with a storied history of good times and bad times.

London has never been a shrinking violet, and with grace, dignity and resolve, has always fought back valiantly and won against its foes.

Today, London deserves our undying love, our steadfast support and, most of all, our continued tourism. It’s one of the most magnificently welcoming cities in the world, and who wouldn’t want to spend a day sightseeing on a hop-on hop-off iconic British red bus, a decadent afternoon shopping with your daughter on Oxford street or a tempting visit to explore the luxe picnic baskets, mouthwatering jams and decadent chocolates at Fortnum and Mason.
