Founded in 1967 as an exclusive escape and restored in recent years to its former glory. The Potlach Club on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera promises to be a place “where you don’t have to do anything.”
Just ‘be’. With so much space, and so few guests, staying at “The Club” that’s located on Old Banks Road in Governors Harbour, feels exceptionally private—a modern day bastion of peace and tranquillity.
Historically speaking
Significant work has been done however, to restore the once star-studded property which now has a new lease on life thanks to Bruce Loshusan and Hans Febles who stumbled upon the derelict Potlatch Club in 2017. Doing their homework, the pair found that the ‘Club’ had fallen into disrepair in the 1980s with the jungle reclaiming the land. To their delight however, they learned that Potlatch was truly hidden gem with a legendary past involving visits from royalty, celebrities, movies stars and musicians
A masterplan
Loshusan and Febles’ restoration took seven years to complete. Starting with cutting back the jungle and identifying which of the buildings could be saved and restored, and which were beyond hope, the duo’s plan included designing new buildings to fit in with the landscape and removing as few mature trees as possible.
Today on the same twelve lush tropical acres, The Potlatch Club is once again a discreet boutique destination that’s perfectly positioned on one of finest pink sand beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. Guests can stay in one of six cottages, two villas and three garden suites decorated in Caribbean colonial style with local art and artifacts.
The Fig Tree
Open for guests to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner, the Fig Tree was named after the ancient banyan fig tree that provides shade for alfresco dining on the terrace. Inside, the large cathedral-like space is cooled by ceiling fans creating the perfect space to appreciate what many claim to be the finest cuisine on the island.
