JR: A pioneering vision

JR is the creative mind behind several monumental works that take buildings and cities as their canvas, from Paris’ Palais Garnier to the Great Pyramid of Giza. Tasked with transforming a carriage for the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, he sought to create a ‘studio on wheels’ —a creative cocoon filled with micro-environments. Throughout the carriage, there are constant secret wonders to discover throughout the lounge, library, bathroom and hidden tearoom. Inspired by Renaissance cabinets of curiosity, L’Observatoire has a level of detail that is never before seen in a train carriage. Old masters of marquetry and stained-glass were called upon, alongside burgeoning artisans-to-watch.

Elegance on the rails…

The Venice Simplon-Orient Express has charmed passengers with grand interiors, exceptional hospitality and magnificent European journeys for over a century.

Now, the train’s owners, Belmond, have announced a new carriage, L’ Observatoire by pioneering artist JR, that will be on the rails in 2025. A one-of-a-kind space to embrace curiosity, adventure and creativity, L’Observatoire’s design is inspired by astronomic observation, old masters and up and coming trailblazers.
