Stepping back in time…

Nestled in the centre of the slowly gentrifying old town, the inconspicuously located Todos Santos Boutique Hotel is a treat to discover. Who knew? It’s a hidden gem on an unassuming side street that meticulously redefines the art of slow living and quiet luxury.

Once owned by a Spanish countess, this ripe-with-history 10-room hideaway oozes intimacy, peaceful sojourns and secrets of days gone by. Well-preserved hand-painted murals and traditional décor has been curated tastefully to include comfort-focused modern accoutrements. Each space paints a vibrantly interesting canvas that carries forward true-to-life images and tales of European colonization, Jesuit missionaries and sugar cane trading.

Promises of riches

Life was tougher than expected when Todos Santos was founded in1724. Locals were converted to Catholicism and survived growing fruits and sugar cane. Eventually, years later the area turned into a thriving little town and it was during that time that the house that is now the hotel was built.

Turn off the world

Here, thanks to the owners abiding philosophy of absolute discretion, guest privacy is cherished beyond all else. Guests are encouraged to “disconnect.” The proprietors are even bold enough to suggest leaving social media behind and politely invite guests to refrain from taking photographs inside the hotel. Believe you me, it’s tempting as there’s something novel around every ancient corner.

A sultry afternoon

Under the Mexican sun, the pleasure of schedule-free wandering about this quaintest of towns seems to make time stand still. It’s another world that takes away the stress of travel and the cares of the world within minutes.  Strolling into tiny galleries and local craft shops, notably run by somewhat eccentric ex-pats, who don’t mind stopping to chat, becomes a delightful way to pass a lazy day.

Simplicity and elegance

Back at our hotel, it’s time for a cooling rest followed by classic cocktails with a dash of innovation at rooftop bar – La Copas. In the mood to linger? Take your time. Soft lights, historic furnishings and earthy tones set the mood for a late dinner at 1890… meticulously prepared, fresh as can be and delightful to the last bite.
