From cranes and fridges to luxe hotels

RING OF KERRY, IRELAND

Known for its one-of-a-kind view, The Europe Hotel & Resort is one of a trio of
Irish hotels privately owned by the Liebherr family, who are perhaps better known to Canadians as the manufacturers of world-class refrigeration technologies and construction equipment.

Hans Liebherr, whose portrait hangs in The Europe’s main lobby, noticed a shortage of accommodation in the Killarney region when he opened his crane manufacturing facility there in 1958.

The story goes that Liebherr fell in love with, and managed to procure, what many suggest is the finest piece of land on the Ring of Kerry. And on this magical ground at the entrance to Ireland’s best-travelled tourist road, Liebherr built his first hotel.

Today, the coveted property is home to one of Ireland’s best-known five-star resorts, with Liebherr’s legacy property having grown to a stunning 187 room and suites, state-of-the-art conference facilities, an ESPA wellness centre and championship golf course. Note to reader: Surprisingly the rooms aren’t air conditioned, so beware of European heatwaves.

Expect clean, eco-friendly décor, a continental atmosphere, plenty of good food and wine, and the sometimes over-whelming company of upscale bus-tour patrons eager to travel the Ring of Kerry. ESPA has created a collection of powerful and highly effective signature treatments for ESPA at The Europe, where there are 16 treatment rooms
as well several manicure and pedicure thrones. The unique series of holistic treatments at this Killarney spa combine traditional European and Eastern philosophies, releasing tensions and restoring a sense of well-being.
