The finer points of owning a residence at sea

One of the most interesting, and perhaps most sought-after lifestyles has become reality for some 165 residence owners on the world’s largest private yacht, The World.

Travelling to the most storied and untamed parts of the globe, life onboard The World appeals to those with a passion for adventure, exploration and discovery. From navigating the North Pole to exploring the wilds of Madagascar and every destination in between every passage is life enriching and horizon broadening. With over 120 landings a year selected by the residents themselves, visits interesting cultural capitals, enchanting harbourside villages and secluded isles of idyllic beauty.

Learning here is live and interactive. Across every ocean and on each continent, residents have the coveted opportunity to personally connected with some of the planet’s greatest brains… thanks to the ship’s Nobel Laureate lecture series. Pre-eminent Experts and knowledgeable insiders like Dr. Shuji Nakamura, inventor of blue light emitting diode LED technology neuroscientist Dr. Edvard Moser and human genome researcher, Dr. Brian Kobilka to mention a few.

Residences become a personalized space to call home with anticipatory service delivered on board by chefs, housekeeping and concierge teams. From elegant studios to spacious three-bedroom homes—each can be customized to suit its occupant’s preferences. The financial concept is similar to owning a luxury condominium or apartment with the amenities of a country club. There is an initiation fee, a purchase outlay and annual ownership contribution to cover the operating, staffing, medical services and maintenance expenses such as fuel, port charges, marine operation requirements and dry-dock refurbishments. The World has a management team and an elected Board of directors, each of whom is a resident.

Itineraries allow for more time than usual in each location and the freedom to come and go at will. Residents share experiences with their multi-generational families and friends.

Recent unique experiences include a remarkable twenty-two day Southern Hemisphere expedition to Antarctica and the southernmost sea on earth. The Ross Sea is a deep bay between Victoria Land and Marie Byrd Land named for British explorer James Clark Ross. The trip earned The World the unique distinction to navigating to the furthest south that a ship has ever gone. Imagine the possibilities—the world is literally their oyster!
