Fogo Island’s new wallpaper and textile collection

Christopher Farr Cloth recently launched a special collaboration with Fogo Island Inn’s Workshops that pays homage to the historical significance of wallpaper that is integral to the design scheme of Fogo Island Inn.  

Design Strategist, Ernst Hupel, reimagined the new designs on behalf of Fogo Island Workshop’s in conjunction with British partner, Christopher Farr Cloth. (represented in Canada by Kravet). The manufacturers kinship in preserving the craft and culture of the past in new forms, while supporting local and ethical production at the highest quality makes them a natural collaborator. 

Just in time for a Spring refresh, the collection which was originally crafter to adorn the walls of the award-winning Fogo Island Inn features four designs: Make Fish, We Sailed Away, Set the Scene and Island Atmospheres in new colourways. Just in time for a spring refresh of a space, the collaboration celebrates the Inn’s commitment to culture, craftsmanship, and ethical design into one’s own space as a celebration of heritage and artistic expression. 

Fogo Island Workshops is a maker and retailer of a delightful collection of contemporary furniture, textiles, and smaller furnishings, locally made on Fogo Island, NL. Their approach, first applied for the furnishing of Fogo Island Inn, is to partner local makers, artisans, and woodworkers with international designers to create objects that speak the language of contemporary design while carrying forward place-specific traditions of craft and storytelling.

A little tip can often go a long way

Different sights, experiences and cuisines and all part of the joy and fun of travelling abroad. However, customs and different tipping protocols can be confusing. Mass tourism has changed some things in some destinations to simply makes sense to research the customs of the host country. 

Here are a few helpful tips that you can use as soon as you’re off the plane so that you’re ready to avoid awkward moments: 

1. Take a decent amount of small bills in the local currency to have on hand with you—this is especially important in more remote areas. 

2. Check for service charges which are often included on the bill—this is quite normal in European countries.

3. Don’t assume that pulling out and using a credit card is the norm everywhere. 

4. Tipping is not as prevalent outside North America and rates are more modest in other parts of the world.

5. In many places, taxi drivers do not expect tips. 

6. China has a no tipping culture and in Japan it can even cause offence.

7. Tips really matter in Africa where gratuities make up a large portion of workers take home pay. It’s advised to hand the money directly to the person who provided the service to make sure they receive it. 

8. Consider leaving tips for your wait staff, hotel room attendants, bag carriers, parking valet, tour guides and private drivers. 

9. A little extra is always appreciated as a reward for good service.
