It’s TV time

Fresh off the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), here’s a peek into upcoming televisions.

If there was one thing perfectly clear at the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas—which serves as a window to the future of tech—the televisions debuting later this year will absolutely blow you away.

Hard to believe but they’re even bigger, thinner, smarter, and offer greater detail and better brightness than what’s currently mounted to your wall.

From AI enhancements that can improve picture quality with older TV shows to 8K (and even 16K) resolution to rendering motion smoothly (for sports, action movies and video games), tomorrow’s TV are worth keeping an eye on. And, as a vague tease to what I’m telling you about later on….some of these TVs also look great even when they’re turned off.

So, if you’re itching for an upgrade, or perhaps have the urge to place a television in a new room, man cave or she shed, take note of these of these exciting  models coming to Canada in 2025. A word of warning however, be aware that pricing isn’t solidified just yet – but rest assured, they’re likely to cost a pretty penny to match their pretty pictures.

Through the looking glass

While we got a sneak peak of this TV last year, LG Electronics officially unveiled its 77-inch LG SIGNATURE OLED T − the world’s first transparent and truly wireless 4K OLED TV – and announced a ship date of December 2024 (at least in the U.S., to start).

When you’re watching television, it looks like any other OLED television. But when you turn it off, the LG SIGNATURE OLED T can become completely see-through, like a windowpane, to blend into your room décor. As such, you don’t need to mount it to your wall, since it’s transparent.

Even better, you’re able to choose to see animated images, such as fish swimming in a virtual fish tank, overlayed on top of the transparent screen. Hard to describe but surely something you’ll want to see in person to fully appreciate.

Because it’s wireless, components – like a cable box, video game system or Blu-ray player – can be connected to LG’s “Zero Connect Box” somewhere else in the room, up to 10 metres away (about 33 feet), the television has a clean, minimalist look. There are no wires or cables around the TV other than what you’ll plug into the wall for power).

Also garnering praise from media at CES, the LG Evo G5 – a super slim and sleek update over the award-winning LG Evo G4. The Evo 64 is now 40 percent brighter, and,for gamers, boasts a 165Hz variable refresh rate (VRR), AMD FreeSync Premium and Nvidia G-Sync.

Wireless wonder

Though Samsung’s “stretchable” TV concept wowed crowds at CES – which created a 3D effect by protruding forward from the centre of the screen – it proved more gimmicky than practical.

Instead, Samsung impressed ore with its QN990F and QN900F “ultra-premium” 8K TVs (7680 × 4320 pixels) that include the company’s comprehensive “Vision AI” family of features, including smart upscaling – which takes content presented in HD or 4K and delivers a near 8K-quality picture (by adding more pixels, or dots, to the image, and other AI magic).

Similar to the LG SIGNATURE OLED T, these Samsung Neo QLED televisions also support Samsung’s “Wireless One Connect Box,” which can transmit up to 8K resolution (up to 120Hz refresh rate) and audio, wirelessly up to 10 feet away − even with obstacles in its path.

Other features include Wi-Fi 7 for super-fast Tizen OS-powered Smart TV access and support for the Samsung Art Store to turn your TV − when not watching TV shows, movies or sports – into a gallery-like experience in your home (now with works of art from The MoMA, Musée d’Orsay, The Met and more).

The updated Samsung Art Store also works with other models, including its best-selling The Frame-branded TVs.

Better brightness

OLED TVs have many advantages over other panel technologies, including much better contrast levels (darker blacks, which also add more depth), wide viewing angles, and fast response times, plus they’re much lighter, thinner, and more energy efficient since no backlighting is required (each individual pixel is its own light source).

With Samsung’s 55-inch OLED S95F TV, it’s also billed as the world’s brightest OLED television, as much as 30 percent brighter than any other, according to Samsung. It also features a glare-free display to remove distractions from external lighting sources, fast 144Hz VRR (ideal for gamers), and a third-generation AI processor for more vivid, visuals.

Go big or go at home

TCL may be best known for their budget-friendly televisions – with some 75-inch models under $1000 – but the nearly 45-year-old Chinese company will also introduce several new high-end models this year.

At a whopping 115 inches, the TCL X955 Premium QD-Mini LED TV wowed the crowds at CES, not just for its massive size but incredible picture clarity, brightness, and colour.

With more than 20,000 local dimming zones and 5000 nits of High Dynamic Range (HDR) brightness, the content on these televisions proved nothing short of gorgeous, also aided by a QLED Pro screen with proprietary T-SCREEN ULTRA technology (which boosts contrast levels and reduces screen reflection).

On the audio front, the TCL X955 will house an integrated ONKYO 6.2.2 Hi-Fi system.

Portable player

Why have a stationary TV when you can  pack it up and bring it around the home? Or easily take it from your home to the family cottage?

The successor to the LG StanbyMe is also portable and wireless LED TV – with a 27-inch touchscreen display that can be rotated and swivelled from horizontal to vertical format based on what you’re watching – and it’s on wheels to be rolled from one room into another. It will sport a resolution of 1440p resolution, up from the existing Full HD (1080p) resolution found in today’s $1299 model.

Thanks to its built-in battery, you can watch up to four hours of content without having to plug it in (up from three hours with today’s version). This means you can roll it into a kid’s room during a sleepover to watch a Disney movie or two, and then maybe move it into the kitchen to follow along with a recipe on YouTube. Or wheel it into the family room to engage in an online fitness class.

You get the idea

On a related note, StanbyMe 2 is also compatible with various devices, so you can stream your favourite content from your phone, tablet, or laptop. It also features LG’s ThinQ app, which lets you manage compatible kitchen and laundry appliances – such as preheating the oven or checking the status of your washing machine.

This updated lifestyle TV also features new travel and mounting accessories (including a removable shoulder strap), and a space at the top of the TV to magnetically affix the wireless remote.

The return of Pana

Once a powerhouse in the TV space with its plasma televisions, Panasonic returning to the Canadian market with its stunning Z95B, a big and bright 4K OLED TV that was unveiled at CES 2025.

To be available at some point this year in 55-, 65- and 75-inch models, these televisions feature a new four-layer OLED panel with primary RGB tandem technology, which aims to improve colour accuracy, brightness, and energy efficiency (unlike plasma TVs of the past!).

Other features will include an ATSC 3.0 tuner, revamped spatial audio system, and as a Smart TV, it’ll be powered by the Amazon Fire TV platform, with support for Alexa voice commands.
