A historic soul revived
One of the largest, and most important, chateaux-hotels in France, Chateau de Montvillargenne also known as Jeanne & the Forest, is the ideal destination for those wishing to explore the regions many treasures.
A descendant of the famous banking family, baroness Jeanne de Rothschild, began construction of this storied chateau in 1911.
With two coats of arms, one for her family and one for her husband’s family at the grand front door, eclectic Neo-Norman timbering, British windows and Wuttemburg style roofs, the Chateau is strategically placed, 50 miles from Paris, in a haven of greenery. Its iconic six-hectare park, overlooks the town of Gouvieux, and is home to a lovely rose garden, Italian style terraces, orchids cultivated in the greenhouses and a winter garden for orange blossoms. There are also two other historic buildings—the Factory and The Hanger which, along with the 80 rooms housed in the chateaux, add 29 more rooms and suites, several dining areas, a bar, a kids club and a spa, swimming pool and fitness suite to the inventory. Each room promises guests an unobstructive view of the surrounding park.

If walls could talk
In an effort to bring the past and present together and restore what’s been lost over time, interior architect Chantal Peyrat, helped transform the Chateaux for modern day use. Classically spirited stylish velvet and brocades mix with plant and animal themes. Her bathrooms are dressed in black and white strips in the spirit of Art Deco and Room 226, the former retreat of Jeanne herself, feels full of mystery and memories.
Peyrat suggests that her inspiration honours the legacy of Jeanne de Rothschild, a woman ahead of her time with a passion for art, architecture and nature. Many of the original decorations such as fabrics, rugs, wallpapers, mouldings, fireplaces and parquets flooring have been replenished by traditional artisans with any new spaces offering a blend of the elegance from the Belle Epoque with a contemporary aesthetic.
A respectful evolution
Today, thanks to the Workers Cultural Centre of Nogent-sur-Marne and CREAR, a unique French organization that brings together artistic craftsmanship, expression and artisanal training, Chateau Montvillargenne stands tall once more—a sanctuary that shares the warmth of a family home, for those looking to escape, connect or enjoy a “workation” in a special setting.
