Tribute to Ukraine

The Love Tunnel in Klevan, Ukraine gets its name from the dense foliage that envelops the tracks,  perfected over the years by the trains’ movements. As I put pen to paper to write this message, I can’t help but wish that I’d hopped on a last minute flight to Italy, to attend Salone del Mobile, Milano. After all, aside from its old world romance meet urban steel location, the immersive event is a design editor’s dream.

Back in full force after a pandemic hiatus, the Salone is the centerpiece of Milan Design Week. Founded in 1961, it’s the largest trade fair of its kind in the world and perhaps the most exciting time of the year for world-class designers and design lovers from across the globe. See and be seen grand soirees go hand-in-hand with a rich program of events, celebrity appearances, new product launches and out-of-this world installations.

This year’s pent up design vibe has technology taking the lead in a first-of-its kind hyperphysical space from HOMMÉS Studio of Portugal called Chromatik House. That leans on European design heritage. Touring visitors use primal senses—hearing, sight, smell and touch to explore virtual spaces in a metaverse of improbable interiors and provocative designs. With dreamlike silhouettes and the unexpected colours of human emotion, visitors leave wondering whether we’re heading for a rebirth of the classics or if the future is still unwritten.Sounds like a powerful experience.

I won’t miss next year!
