The joy of play

Often framed as the territory of childhood, the magic of play doesn’t have to expire when adulthood comes around. At any age, play can foster new energy, new interests and new connections. Especially true in a world of deadlines, work and family responsibilities moments of play can reopen the door to curiosity, wonder or spontaneity.

Play time for some can be the adrenaline rush of zip-lining, an afternoon of watersports or a boisterous family soccer game that is a fun push back from the weekly day-to-day routine. For adventurers, outdoor activities at any time of year, can be a thrilling way to connect with nature. A challenging hike, a jungle zipline or a snorkeling expedition can combine physical activity with the excitement of seeing and learning.

Leisure activities can also be playful with a cultural twist that delivers new skills and special connections. Think Basílica de la Sagrada Família in Barcelona, street food in Bangkok or a gallery tour in Milan. Creative pursuits like a resort cooking class using fresh local ingredients, fabulous dances and concerts that involve regional music or learning how to do something new that you can take home can be both amusing and rejuvenating.

And, socially connected experiences like a quiet bike ride through the park with friends, a mixologist hosted cocktail making class or a curated wine tasting tour can breathe new life into a weekend getaway.

In essence adult play is about feeling free, letting loose a bit and allowing yourself to leave the routine behind for a few hours of exploration, laugher and small pleasures.

….all reminder that joy is not frivolous but a vital part of a fulsome life.
