Some places impress, others stay with you

Far more than a slogan, “intentionality” is a mindset that’s woven into the Rancho Valencia guest experience in ways both large and small, creating an atmosphere where guests feel seen, valued and genuinely cared for.

Nestled on 45 acres of gardens, vibrant bougainvillea, towering palms, citrus trees, cactus gardens and dramatic desert landscapes just north of San Diego, Rancho Valencia is an independently owned member of the Relais & Châteaux group with an intimate, residential feel that immediately puts guests at ease. Here, requests are met not with obligation, but with enthusiasm.

Accommodation consists of just forty-nine, hacienda-style casitas and suites that feature indoor-outdoor living spaces and private garden patios. Some of the larger villas and private residences accommodate families, corporate retreats and multigenerational holidays.

For tennis buffs, Rancho Valencia has become one of Southern California’s prized destinations. Its tennis village, a part of the very fabric of the resort, features hard courts, red clay courts, pickleball and padel, along with coaching and junior development programs.

Wellness at Rancho extends beyond the spa and fitness centre and is integrated throughout a guest’s stay. More than one hundred and ten complimentary classes are offered each week, welcoming every level of participant. Yoga, Pilates, spinning, TRX, strength training, breathwork, meditation and cardio classes allow guests to move as much—or as little—as they wish.

The spa offers thoughtfully curated body treatments, facials and restorative therapies, complemented by tranquil pools and relaxation spaces. One experience that particularly intrigued me was the ‘Crystal Alchemy Sound Bath’. In a world characterized by constant stimulation and noise, it’s an immersive experience offering an opportunity to restore and reset the nervous system through sound and vibration.

For those seeking a different form of recovery, a cold plunge pool provides another pathway to resilience and renewal. Wellness juices, protein smoothies and Theraguns for muscle recovery are complimentary. Personal trainers are highly credentialed yet approachable in an atmosphere that’s supportive rather than intimidating.

Respect for ingredients is evident throughout the dining experience that feels nourishing rather than an excessive. Herbs and vegetables are harvested from the property’s gardens. Fresh eggs come from the resort’s chicken coop. Sauces are thoughtfully crafted from raw ingredients rather than relying on shortcuts. The result, an emphasis on freshness, seasonality and quality.

But, what I’ll remember most are the small gestures. Each morning, a chilled bottle of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice awaited outside our casita. I’d requested a switch from orange on my first day. A complimentary tennis hat, fresh fruit or other thoughtful surprises also appeared, reinforcing the goal of intentionally getting to know your guest.

In an era when so much high-end travel feels increasingly standardized, Rancho Valencia remains deeply personalized. Every detail, gesture and interaction reflects a culture built around intention, care and connection.

Now, the only question is, “when can we find the time to return?”
